چکیده
This paper presents an overview of Dr. Mabry’s accomplishments in his career as a natural product chemist, first at the University of Zürich as a post-doctorate and since 1962 as a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Botany until the late 1990’s when the Biological Sciences programs at UT-Austin were completely reorganized; then until his retirement in 2006, he was a member of the Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology faculty. 7 This paper was originally published as: “Tom J. Saponins are secondary metabolites that are found in many plants and some animals. These compounds are high molecular weight glycosides, consisting of a sugar moiety linked to a triterpene or steroid aglycone. Many saponins have detergency properties and give stable foam in water. The genus Silene L. with more than 700 species is one of the largest genera of the family Caryophyllaceae mainly di...
متن کاملIsolation and Structure Elucidation of Two Triterpene Saponins from the Roots of Phytolacca Americana
Purification of the n-BuOH fraction of the aqueous alcoholic extract from the roots of Phytolacca americana resulted in the isolation of two triterpene saponins named esculentoside B (1), and esculentoside A (2). The structures of isolated compounds were characterized on the basis of extensive spectral data (1D and 2D NMR; and MS) and in comparison with their Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) an...
متن کاملHemolytic and Cytotoxic Properties of Saponin Purified from Holothuria leucospilota Sea Cucumber
Background: Holothuroids (sea cucumbers) are members of the phylum echinodermata, which produce saponins. Saponins exhibit a wide spectrum of pharmacological and biological activities. In this study, we isolated the crude saponins from the body wall of the dominant Iranian species of sea cucumber, Holothuria leucospilota (H. leucospilota). The purpose of this study was to confirm the presence o...
